Local Gov't Committee Approves Citizen Mike's Bill
Eliminating Obsolete Assessor Position in First Class Townships

HARRISBURG – The State Senate Local Government Committee today
unanimously approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Mike "Citizen Mike" Folmer
(R-Lebanon) that would eliminate the elected position of assessor in first class
townships.
"This is an outdated and redundant position, and we'll save
taxpayers money by eliminating it," Folmer said, noting that the assessor
position has recently been eliminated by the General Assembly in municipalities
of other sizes, including second class townships.
"County governments are already required by law to assess
municipalities, so it is pointless and wasteful to elect assessors in first
class townships," Folmer added. Counties, he said, will save money in ballot
printing costs, election certification procedures and other duties associated
with locally elected positions.
The legislation – Senate Bill 709 – will now go before the full
Senate for consideration. |
