September 17th marks the 231st anniversary of when 39 delegates to the Convention signed the United States Constitution.

School Safety and Security Grant Program

Schools can now submit applications for the new School Safety and Security Grant Program.  The program will provide grants of at least $25,000 to help create school safety programs, hire and train personnel or purchase security equipment to help provide a safer learning environment for students.

A total of $52.5 million will be distributed through the new grant program, which is open to all PA school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools, charter schools and private residential rehabilitative institutions.

Eligible uses for the grants include hiring school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students and other programs and services to protect students.

Schools must complete and submit an application by October 12 in order to be considered for a grant.  Additional information is available at this website, and by clicking on the “School Safety and Security Grant Program” link.

Research Grant Opportunities to Address Ag Challenges

Research institutions, businesses, farmers and other organizations seeking funding support for innovative research that will advance the diversity, productivity and profitability of agriculture in PA may apply for grants through the PA Department of Agriculture’s research program.

Proposals encouraged to apply are those that identify and develop new markets for agricultural commodities; use emerging technologies to improve the safety and transparency of the food system; identify gaps in PA’s infrastructure that inhibit growth; seek to control the Spotted Lanternfly; protect pollinators, and; prepare a workforce to meet the industry’s needs.

More than $860,000 will be available for this year for non-animal-based research projects. Applications are now being accepted and can be sent to:  PA Department of Agriculture, Attn: Research Solicitation Review Committee, Room 211, 2301 North Cameron Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110.  The deadline to apply is September 28.  Further grant details are outlined in this PA Bulletin notice.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Middle and high school students (grades 5-12) who have made contributions to their communities through volunteerism in the past year are eligible to apply for the National Association of Secondary School Principals 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, which honors PA’s top youth volunteers of the year.  Applications, which are available at, can be certified by a school principal, or head of a Girl Scout council, county 4-H organization, American Red Cross chapter, YMCA or affiliate of Points of Light’s HandsOn Network.  The application deadline is November 6.
